TOLCARNE LADY’S DEATH

 PROBABLY DUE TO BICYCLE ACCIDENT

At the inquest on Thursday on Mrs Priscilla Williams, 72, widow, of 14, Charles Street, Tolcarne, John Richards, fish hawker, Jack Lane, Newlyn, said on July 4th, he saw deceased crossing the road near Barclay’s Bank, Newlyn.  A cyclist approaching rang his bell, applied his brakes, but before the machine had quite stopped the front wheel struck deceased.  The cyclist fell to the ground.  He did not consider the cyclist was in any way to blame.

Jane Williams, 53 High Street, Penzance, daughter-in-law, said as the result of the accident deceased sustained a slight fracture of the skull.  She had complained of her head ever since.

Thomas Hichens Maddern, Gwavas Quay, Newlyn, the rider of the bicycle, said he rang his bell and applied the brakes, and as he fell off he struck deceased, knocking her down.  He also did not consider the accident was his fault.

Dr Thornhill, Penzance, attributed death to paralysis, probably due to the fracture of the skull by the accident.  But for the accident deceased might have been living now.—Verdict: “Accidental Death.”
