Windfall for a Mousehole Man in 1904

A Nice Nest Egg

By the last Australian mail Mr. John Dennis, jr., received news of the death of his aunt, Mrs. Martha Maddern, at Adelaide.  The same letter informed him that by her demise he became heir to all his aunt’s effects.  Current talk name a very large amount as the legacy in the first place but after enquiries were made it was found that a sum of money of between three and four hundred was about the amount due.  This amount should, however, prove very useful to its recipient, who follows the occupation of a fish “jouster” and is a familiar personage around the neighbourhood.  Mr. Dennis is a young man, but has lost an arm through an accident when a boy.  One Thursday he was carrying a sack of flour to his home and rested it on the railings which surrounds the harbour at Mousehole.  The bag overbalanced and in an endeavour to save the flour Mr. Dennis fell over cliff after the bag, luckily pitching on top of the flour.  His fall was broken to some extent, but the arm was so shattered as to need amputation.
